Raw strength or structured strength?

A dichotomy that deserves to be overcome

Pilates and weight training are often pitted against each other as if they were two incompatible worlds. On one side, the gym, heavy weights, and the pursuit of muscle mass and visible power. On the other, Pilates, still too often perceived as a gentle or primarily feminine practice.

This dichotomy, however, is simplistic.

The real question is not which discipline is “better,” but understanding what kind of strength one is developing and for what purpose.

Throughout my life, I’ve had the chance to work with many elite athletes, whether in soccer, tennis, or rugby. What I observed in them was not only exceptional physical ability, but also a deep understanding of the body and a nuanced grasp of the need to balance power and structure. The most successful athletes don’t train solely to generate strength; they train to transmit it effectively and sustainably.

This is precisely where Pilates comes into play.

Raw strength: visible, effective, but sometimes incomplete

Traditional weight training is based on a simple and effective principle: applying an external load to trigger muscle adaptation. It builds muscle mass, maximum power, and the ability to lift heavy weights. It follows a vertical, often linear approach, where the muscle is targeted in a focused manner.

This approach works, and it can be extremely beneficial when practiced rigorously. However, when it becomes the sole focus, it can exacerbate certain imbalances. The dominant muscle chains become more developed, while the deep muscles, responsible for fine stability, sometimes remain under-stimulated. Thoracic mobility can become restricted, the hips can lose range of motion, and the lower back can become overloaded.

Many of the active men I work with in Nice fit this profile: strong, powerful, but limited in terms of rotation, sensitive in the lower back, and sometimes tense in their posture. The issue is not a lack of strength, but an internal organization that could be improved.

Structured Strength: Transmission and Movement Intelligence

The method developed by Joseph Pilates offers a different approach. It places the core at the heart of the body’s structure—not merely as a static stabilizer, but as a dynamic foundation capable of supporting movement in all three dimensions.

On the Reformer, the resistance of the springs does more than simply provide a load; it forces the body to constantly adjust. The pelvis must remain stable while the legs push, the shoulders must stay grounded while the arms move, and breathing must accompany every phase of the effort. This coordination develops functional strength, capable of adapting to various demands.

It is not about producing more brute force, but about structuring existing strength.

If Pilates were merely a gentle exercise, it wouldn’t have found its place in the training regimens of many international athletes. Well-known figures like Cristiano Ronaldo have incorporated the Pilates Reformer into their physical training, not to “get more flexible,” but to optimize their stability and recovery. Even celebrities like Sylvester Stallone and singer Ed Sheeran have publicly discussed their practice, highlighting its impact on posture, breathing, and longevity.

Beyond the names, what matters is the logic that unites them: when seeking sustainable performance, one quickly realizes that strength alone is not enough. It must be organized.

Throughout my career, working with demanding athletes, I have seen how Pilates can become a strategic complement, helping to balance intense training and preserve the body over the long term.

Two philosophies of the body, a potential synergy

The gym primarily works against gravity, along often predictable axes. The Reformer, on the other hand, engages the body in multiple vectors—horizontal, oblique, and rotational—introducing controlled instability that develops neuromuscular coordination.

One builds visible muscle mass.

The other builds the invisible architecture.

These two approaches are not necessarily mutually exclusive. They can complement each other, provided we understand that true performance rests on a stable foundation.
